Approximately October 21, 2019
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the strategic consolidation of hospital services by its parent organization, UPMC Susquehanna. In October 2019, the Divine Providence Hospital's emergency department was permanently closed, and the facility was repurposed into a center primarily for outpatient and specialty care. With the cessation of emergency and inpatient services that require rapid transport, the medical evacuation heliport at this location became operationally obsolete.
The heliport is permanently closed and decommissioned. The physical site, which is a ground-level helipad located on the west side of the campus, is still visible but is no longer maintained for aviation purposes. The former hospital is now the UPMC Divine Providence Campus, a major hub for a wide range of outpatient services, including primary and specialty care, rehabilitation, imaging, and behavioral health. All emergency and air ambulance traffic for UPMC in the Williamsport area is now directed to the active heliport at the main UPMC Williamsport campus (FAA Identifier: 9PA2).
The Divine Providence Hospital Heliport was a critical asset for the regional emergency medical system in North Central Pennsylvania. When active, it served as a primary receiving point for air ambulance services, such as UPMC's STAT MedEvac and Geisinger's Life Flight, which transported critically ill and injured patients. The heliport played a vital role in the 'golden hour' of trauma care, providing rapid medical access for residents of Williamsport and the surrounding rural areas of Lycoming County. It was an integral part of the hospital's function as an acute care facility before services were centralized.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The closure was part of a permanent, long-term strategic decision by UPMC to centralize acute, trauma, and emergency care at its main Williamsport campus. As the Divine Providence campus no longer operates an emergency room or handles the types of acute inpatient admissions that would necessitate air transport, there is no operational or medical need for the heliport to be reactivated.
