Approximately 2015-2016. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the helipad markings were present in 2014 but had been removed by 2016. The closure coincided with major redevelopment projects in the area.
The primary reason for the closure was the redevelopment of the property. The Chestnut Street Garage was acquired by and integrated into the expanding campus of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. As part of the university's development, which included the construction of a new 17-story academic tower connected to the garage, the heliport was deemed unnecessary for the university's operations and was subsequently decommissioned and removed.
The site is now the top level of the Harrisburg University (HU) parking garage, located at 350 Chestnut Street. The helipad markings, windsock, and any other specific aviation infrastructure have been completely removed. The roof surface is now utilized for vehicle parking and houses building infrastructure, such as elevator machine rooms. The garage is fully operational, serving Harrisburg University students and faculty as well as the general public, and is physically connected to the university's modern academic tower.
The Chestnut Street Garage Heliport was a private-use heliport situated on the roof of a public parking garage in downtown Harrisburg. Its main function was to provide convenient helicopter access for corporate executives, government officials, and other private flyers to the heart of Pennsylvania's state capital. Its strategic location near the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex and the city's business district made it a valuable asset for rapid, point-to-point transportation. It was not a public-use facility and did not handle scheduled commercial flights or primary medical emergency services, which were directed to dedicated hospital helipads.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Chestnut Street Garage Heliport. The space has been fully repurposed for parking and building support as part of the integrated university campus. Re-establishing a heliport at this location would require significant new construction, investment, and a demonstrated operational need, none of which have been publicly discussed or proposed by the current owners.
