The airport was likely closed between the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was still depicted on the 1993 Cheyenne Sectional Chart but was no longer present on the 2004 edition. Satellite imagery from 2005 confirms the land had been converted to agricultural use by that time, suggesting a closure in the preceding years.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically the conversion of the land for agricultural use. Satellite imagery clearly shows that the area formerly occupied by the runway is now part of a field cultivated with a center-pivot irrigation system. This is a common fate for small, private airfields in rural areas where the land becomes more valuable for farming than for aviation.
The site of the former Phelps Airport is now actively used for agriculture. High-resolution satellite imagery shows no remaining trace of the runway, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure. The land has been fully reclaimed for farming and is covered by a large center-pivot irrigation circle.
Phelps Airport was a small, privately-owned airfield. It was not of major historical significance but served as a local general aviation facility. Aeronautical charts from the 1970s through the 1990s depict it as a private field with a single unpaved, north/south turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. Operations would have been limited to light, single-engine aircraft, likely for personal use by the owner and potentially for agricultural purposes such as crop dusting, which is common in the region.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Phelps Airport. The complete conversion of the site to valuable, irrigated farmland makes a return to aviation use extremely unlikely from both a logistical and economic standpoint.
