Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2018-2020. Satellite imagery shows the heliport was still intact in 2017 but had been cleared for new construction by 2021.

Reason for Closure

The heliport was closed due to the sale and redevelopment of the land for a major industrial project. The site was acquired for the construction of the Magnolia LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) export terminal, making the heliport's operation at that location obsolete. PHI consolidated its operations at other regional facilities.

Current Status

The site has been completely cleared of all aviation infrastructure, including hangars, administrative buildings, and helipads. It is currently the active construction site for the Magnolia LNG export terminal, a large-scale energy project located on the Calcasieu Ship Channel.

Historical Significance

For decades, this heliport was a major shore base for Petroleum Helicopters, Inc. (PHI), one of the world's largest helicopter operators supporting the energy sector. It served as a critical logistics hub for the offshore oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico. Its primary operations included transporting thousands of workers for crew changes to and from offshore platforms and drilling rigs, delivering time-sensitive equipment and supplies, and providing emergency medical evacuation (medevac) services. The heliport was a significant contributor to the regional economy and a vital piece of infrastructure for Gulf of Mexico energy exploration and production.

Reopening Prospects

None. The prospect of reopening this heliport is non-existent. The land has been permanently repurposed and is undergoing a complete transformation into a large industrial facility. The original heliport has been demolished, and PHI has successfully relocated and consolidated its regional flight operations at other bases, such as their facility at Lake Charles Regional Airport (KLCH).
