Approximately 2009-2010. The airport was first listed as 'Closed Indefinitely' in the 2010 AOPA Airport Directory. The closure is closely associated with the passing of its owner, Charles R. Brown, in 2011.
Personal reasons related to the private owner. Small, private-use airfields like this are often closed when the owner can no longer maintain them, sells the property, or passes away. The death of the owner/operator is the most probable reason for its permanent closure.
The site is private property and is no longer used for aviation. Recent satellite imagery shows that the grass runway is still visible but is unmaintained, overgrown, and appears to be used as a simple field, possibly for agriculture. The single hangar located at the northeast end of the former runway is still standing. The land has effectively reverted to agricultural or fallow use.
Eagle's Nest Airport (formerly FAA LID: KY87) was a small, private airfield established sometime between 1977 and 1982. It featured a single 2,600-foot turf runway. Its operations were exclusively for general aviation, serving the owner's personal aircraft and potentially a few other local pilots for recreational flying. It had no commercial, cargo, or military role and its significance was purely local to its owner and the immediate aviation community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Given that it was a private field and the original owner has passed away, reopening would require the current landowner to have a significant interest and financial investment in restoring it for aviation, which is highly unlikely.
