The airport was closed sometime between 1970 and 1972. It was last depicted on the 1970 Nashville Sectional Chart and was no longer present on the 1972 edition of the same chart.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a small, privately owned airfield, it was most likely closed for private reasons, such as the sale of the property, the owner's retirement, or economic non-viability. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident, military conversion, or government action.
The site of the former airport is now private property used for agriculture and residential purposes. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals that the faint outline of the former north-south runway is still visible as a linear feature in the fields. However, a private home has been constructed over the southern end of the former runway, and no original airport infrastructure, such as hangars or markings, remains.
Russell Airport (also known as Russell Field) was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its earliest known depiction on an aeronautical chart was in 1965. According to a 1968 flight guide, the airport was operated by W.G. Russell and featured a single 2,200-foot unpaved turf runway, designated 18/36. Its operations were limited to serving the owner and potentially other local private pilots. It did not handle commercial, cargo, or military operations and its historical significance is confined to local general aviation history.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Russell Airport. The land has been defunct as an airfield for over 50 years and has been partially redeveloped for residential use, making any return to aviation service infeasible and extremely unlikely.
