Circa 1982. The airport was last depicted on the 1981 Detroit Sectional Chart. The 1982 FAA Airport/Facility Directory included the remark 'Airport closed indefinitely'. It was no longer shown on charts by 1994.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented, which is common for small, private airfields. However, given its status as a private strip owned by an individual (Max Johnson), the closure was likely due to personal reasons such as retirement, health, the owner's passing, or the economic costs of maintaining the airfield.
The site is currently part of a private agricultural property. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint but distinct outline of the former north/south turf runway. The area is now a grass field, likely used for hay or simply maintained as part of the surrounding farmland. Several farm buildings, including a house and silos, are located at the southern end of the former runway.
Johnson Airport, also known as Johnson Field, was a small, private general aviation airport. Its significance was primarily local, serving its owner and potentially other private pilots in the area. It featured a single north/south unpaved turf runway, listed as 2,600 feet long. The airfield was active and appeared on aeronautical charts from at least 1970 through 1981, serving as a base for light, single-engine aircraft typical of private recreational flying.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Johnson Airport. Having been closed for approximately four decades and fully integrated into a private farm, its revival as an aviation facility is considered extremely unlikely.
