Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport is confirmed to have closed between 1970 and 1972. It was still depicted on the 1970 Detroit Sectional Chart but was no longer present on the 1972 edition of the same chart.

Reason for Closure

While no single official reason is documented, the closure is presumed to be for economic reasons. Small general aviation airfields like Elwood, which operated with a single turf runway, often closed due to declining use, rising operational costs, or the owner's decision to sell or repurpose the land for more profitable ventures, such as agriculture.

Current Status

The site of the former Elwood Airport has been completely converted into farmland. All airport infrastructure, including the runway, hangars, and any other buildings, has been removed. The land is now actively used for agriculture. The only remaining public trace of its existence is a nearby street named 'Airport Road'. In some satellite images, a faint outline of the former north/south runway can still be discerned in the fields.

Historical Significance

Elwood Airport was a small general aviation facility that served the local community. Established sometime between 1949 and 1954, it operated as a privately-owned, public-use airport. Its primary infrastructure consisted of a single north/south unpaved turf runway, measuring approximately 2,200 feet. The airport catered to private pilots for recreational flying and may have supported light charter, flight training, or agricultural aviation. It was never a hub for commercial or military operations. According to a 1963 directory, the operator was Don Sisk.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Elwood Airport. The facility has been defunct for over 50 years, and the land has been fully reclaimed for private agricultural use. Re-establishing an airport on this site would be prohibitively expensive and is considered highly improbable.
