The airport was closed due to economic factors and urban development. Located in the rapidly growing suburban area of Trinity/New Port Richey, the land's value for commercial real estate far exceeded its value as a general aviation airport. The property was sold to The Sembler Company, a real estate developer, to build a shopping center.
The airport site was completely demolished and redeveloped. It is now the location of 'The Shoppes at Trinity Lakes,' a large retail power center. The property is occupied by major retailers such as Target, PetSmart, and Bealls, along with numerous smaller stores, restaurants, and extensive parking lots. There are no visible remnants of the former runway, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure.
The airport at this location was officially known as Hidden Lake Airport (FAA identifier: FA40), not Tampa Bay Executive Airport. The ICAO code US-10022 is a non-standard identifier likely from a third-party database for closed airfields.
Hidden Lake Airport was a privately owned, public-use general aviation airport established sometime between 1972 and 1979. It was a vital asset for the local aviation community in Pasco County, featuring a single paved north/south runway (18/36) that was approximately 4,425 feet long. The airport supported various operations including flight training, aircraft rentals, private and recreational flying, and aircraft storage in its T-hangars. It was home to a Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) and a flight school, serving as a community hub for local pilots for over two decades.
There are zero plans or prospects for the airport to reopen. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for high-value commercial use. Reacquiring the property and demolishing a major, active shopping center to rebuild an airport is economically and logistically infeasible.
I have many fond memories of 3fd1. I soloed there. But it has closed many years ago.
