Circa 1987
The heliport's primary function was to serve the Marineland of the Pacific theme park. When the park was purchased by the owners of SeaWorld and abruptly closed in early 1987, the heliport lost its main purpose and traffic source, leading to its closure around the same time.
The site of the former heliport and the entire Marineland park has been completely redeveloped. It is now the location of the Terranea Resort, a large, luxury oceanfront hotel and spa that opened in 2009. All traces of the original heliport and theme park have been removed and replaced by the resort's buildings, golf course, and landscaping.
The Long Point Heliport was a significant transportation hub for tourism in Southern California from the 1960s to the 1980s. It was a key stop for Los Angeles Airways (LAA), one of the world's first scheduled helicopter airlines. LAA operated frequent passenger flights using large Sikorsky S-61 helicopters, connecting Marineland with other major destinations like Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Disneyland. This service made the remote Palos Verdes peninsula easily accessible for tourists and was a showcase of modern helicopter travel during that era.
There are no prospects for reopening the original Long Point Heliport (US-10020). The land is privately owned and fully occupied by the Terranea Resort. While the resort does operate its own modern, private helipad for guest use (Terranea Heliport, FAA Identifier: 2CA1), this is a new and separate facility and not a revival of the historic public-use heliport.
