Approximately late 2020. The heliport, officially identified by the FAA as 01AL, was removed from the FAA's Chart Supplement publication effective December 31, 2020. It was present in the preceding publication cycle, indicating its official decommissioning occurred between November and December 2020.
Economic and operational redundancy. The primary reason for the heliport's closure was the Alabama Department of Transportation's (ALDOT) decision to sell its state-owned helicopter. In late 2019, ALDOT put its 2008 Bell 407 helicopter up for sale. Without an aircraft to operate from the facility, the heliport became unnecessary, leading to its eventual official closure with the FAA.
The heliport is permanently closed to all air traffic. The site itself is the rooftop of the still-active Alabama Department of Transportation main office building at 1409 Coliseum Boulevard in Montgomery. While officially decommissioned, satellite imagery as of 2023 shows that the physical helipad markings (a circle with an 'H') remain painted on the rooftop surface.
The Aldot Complex Heliport was a private, rooftop helipad located at the headquarters of the Alabama Department of Transportation. Its sole purpose was to support ALDOT's mission. Operations included transporting state officials, conducting aerial inspections of highway and bridge construction projects, and enabling rapid damage assessment of state infrastructure following natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes. The heliport was a critical logistical asset for ALDOT, allowing for efficient travel and oversight of transportation systems throughout the state for many years. It was a private use facility and not open to the public.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The closure was a direct result of ALDOT divesting its helicopter assets. For the heliport to become operational again, the state would need to purchase a new helicopter and re-establish an aviation program, for which there is no current indication. The trend has been for government agencies to reduce such costs, making a reopening highly improbable.
