The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, more modern facility. The current Grove Hill Airport (FAA: 3A0) was constructed a few miles to the northeast with a paved runway and better facilities. The original airport, with its unpaved turf runways, was deemed obsolete and inadequate for the community's evolving aviation needs.
The site of the former airport is now privately owned and has been repurposed. The distinct 'X' shape of the former runways is still clearly visible in satellite imagery, but they are heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and trees. The land is now used for timber production and forestry, consistent with the surrounding land use. There are no remaining airport buildings, such as hangars or terminals, on the site.
The original Grove Hill Municipal Airport was a classic general aviation airfield that served the town of Grove Hill, the county seat of Clarke County, for approximately 50 years, from the 1940s until its closure. It featured two unpaved runways arranged in an 'X' pattern, the longest of which was around 3,200 feet. Its primary operations included supporting private pilots, agricultural aviation (crop dusting), and light business transport for the local area. It did not have scheduled commercial passenger service and its significance was purely at the local level.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the old Grove Hill Municipal Airport. The existence of the newer, superior Grove Hill Airport (3A0) makes reopening the original site functionally redundant and economically infeasible. The land has been repurposed, and the former runways are in a state of complete disrepair, meaning a full reconstruction would be required, for which there is no demand.
