The airport was closed sometime between 1982 and 1998. It was last depicted on a Chicago Sectional Chart in 1970 and was no longer shown on the 1981 edition. The 1982 AOPA Airport Directory listed it as 'Airport closed to public', suggesting it may have remained in private use for a few more years before ceasing all operations entirely.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a small airfield owned by a private individual (John Hagi), the closure was most likely due to personal reasons such as the owner's retirement, death, or the rising costs and liability of maintaining an airstrip. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident, military conversion, or urban encroachment.
The site of the former airport is now private agricultural land and is actively farmed. The land has been fully reclaimed for cultivation. However, in satellite imagery, the faint, straight outline of the former 2,600-foot turf runway is still clearly visible in the field. A building that was likely a hangar or residence associated with the airfield remains on the property to the west of the former runway.
Hagi Landing Area was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was established in the early 1960s and first appeared in the 1962 AOPA Airport Directory. The facility consisted of a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway, oriented approximately north-south. Its operations were limited to serving light, single-engine aircraft for personal, recreational, and possibly agricultural purposes. It was a typical example of a private 'farm strip' common in the mid-20th century, serving the needs of the owner and potentially a few local pilots.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Hagi Landing Area Airport. The land has been converted to agricultural use for several decades, and the runway no longer exists in a usable state. A return to aviation operations is considered highly improbable.
