The airport was closed sometime between 2004 and 2016. While an exact date is not public, satellite imagery from 2004 shows the runway beginning to be reclaimed by vegetation. The airport was officially removed from the Brownsville Sectional Chart by 2016, and a 2017 FAA directory listed its status as 'Airport closed indefinitely'.
The closure was due to abandonment by its private owners. As a private-use airfield serving the Tajos Ranch, it likely fell into disuse as the operational needs of the ranch changed or the owners no longer required or wished to maintain an airstrip. The gradual overgrowth visible in historical imagery points to a lack of maintenance rather than a sudden closure event like an accident or land sale.
The site is completely abandoned and has been reclaimed by nature. Current satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the clear outline of the former north-south runway, but it is entirely overgrown with thick South Texas brush and is unusable for any aviation purposes. The land remains part of the private Tajos Ranch property and is not publicly accessible.
South Tajos Ranch Airport, which also used the FAA identifier 1TE1, was a significant private airfield supporting the operations of the vast and historic Kenedy Ranch, one of the largest ranches in Texas. Its primary function was to handle general aviation traffic for the ranch's business. This included transporting the owners, employees, and high-profile guests; conducting aerial surveys of the massive property and livestock; and facilitating the movement of parts and supplies to the remote location. Its 4,000-foot unpaved runway could accommodate a range of light to medium twin-propeller aircraft, making it a vital logistical asset for the private ranching empire.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Any potential for reopening would be an entirely private decision by the owners of the Kenedy Ranch. Given the significant cost that would be required to clear the vegetation and restore the runway to a safe, usable condition, reopening is considered highly unlikely.
