Approximately between 2017 and 2019. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the facility was clearly operational in early 2017, but by 2019, aviation markings were faded and the area was being used for industrial storage, indicating a cessation of flight operations during that period.
Primarily for economic and strategic reasons. The significant downturn in the offshore oil and gas industry that began in late 2014 prompted many companies to streamline operations and cut costs. Harvey Gulf International Marine likely consolidated its aviation logistics by using larger, shared-use, third-party heliports in the region (such as the nearby South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr. Airport, KGAO). Closing a private, single-company heliport and outsourcing aviation services is a common cost-saving measure, allowing the company to focus on its core marine transportation business.
The site is no longer an active aviation facility. It has been fully repurposed by Harvey Gulf International Marine as a shore base, equipment laydown yard, and storage facility for its marine operations. The former helipads and tarmac are now used for storing large industrial components, pipes, shipping containers, and parking for company vehicles and heavy equipment. The main hangar building remains but is now used for warehousing or maintenance related to their marine fleet, not aircraft.
The Harvey Gulf Heliport was a private-use facility owned and operated by Harvey Gulf International Marine, a major marine transportation company. Its primary and vital role was to support the company's extensive offshore oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico. The heliport served as a crucial logistics hub for transporting personnel for crew changes, moving light, time-sensitive cargo, and delivering essential supplies to the company's fleet of advanced offshore supply vessels (OSVs) and the offshore platforms and rigs they serviced. It was an integral part of the company's operational infrastructure in the busy Port Fourchon and Golden Meadow corridor.
Extremely low to non-existent. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The complete conversion of the site to a marine support yard would require significant investment to revert back to aviation use. Furthermore, the industry trend of consolidating aviation logistics at larger, more efficient, multi-user facilities makes the operation of a private heliport economically unviable for a single company. It is far more cost-effective for Harvey Gulf to continue using established regional heliports for its needs.
