Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was closed between 1993 and 2004. It was last depicted on the 1993 Halifax Sectional Aeronautical Chart. By 2005, the FAA's Airport/Facility Directory officially listed it as 'Airport closed indefinitely'.

Reason for Closure

The closure was for economic and corporate reasons. The airport was a private field owned by the Georgia-Pacific Corporation to support its large pulp and paper mill in nearby Woodland, Maine. Georgia-Pacific sold the mill in 2001. The airport, being a corporate asset tied directly to the mill's operations, was no longer required and was subsequently decommissioned and abandoned.

Current Status

The airport site is completely abandoned and is reverting to forest. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint outline of the former north-south runway, but it is heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and young trees. There are no remaining structures, and the land is unused for any aviation-related or other developed purpose. It is now indistinguishable from the surrounding commercial timberland.

Historical Significance

Saint Croix Airport was a private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1968 and 1977. Its sole purpose was to serve as a corporate airstrip for the Georgia-Pacific Corporation. It provided convenient air access to the company's extensive timberlands and its major pulp mill in the remote Downeast Maine region. The airport featured a single turf runway (Runway 16/34) approximately 2,600 feet in length and handled private and corporate aircraft supporting company business.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The original corporate need for the airfield is gone, and the site's remote location, lack of infrastructure, and advanced state of overgrowth make any potential reactivation for public or private use economically and logistically infeasible.
