Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was closed sometime between 2009 and 2013. The final decision to repurpose the land was solidified in 2017 when the town of Freedom's planning board approved the construction of a solar farm on the site, permanently ending its aviation use.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons. As a small, privately-owned airfield, the land became more valuable for commercial redevelopment. The owners ultimately sold the property for the development of a solar energy project, which was a more profitable use of the large, flat, open space.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of the 'Freedom Solar' project. It hosts a 2.1-megawatt ground-mounted solar array that covers the footprint of the former runway and taxiways. The land is now used exclusively for renewable energy generation.

Historical Significance

White Mountain Gateway Airport, which also used the FAA identifier 2NH2, was a private general aviation airport established sometime in the 1970s. It featured a single turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long, designated 18/36. Its primary significance was serving as a local air access point for tourists, second-home owners, and recreational pilots visiting the White Mountains and the Ossipee Lake region of New Hampshire. As its name suggests, it functioned as a 'gateway' for light aircraft, supporting private flights and likely scenic tours of the picturesque area. It was never a major commercial or military facility, but it played a small role in the local tourism economy.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The construction of the large-scale, permanent solar farm on the property makes its conversion back to an airfield physically and economically infeasible. The land has been permanently repurposed.
