Approximately October 1, 2022. The heliport's closure directly coincided with the discontinuation of hospital and emergency department services at the associated medical facility.
The heliport was closed due to a strategic restructuring by its owner, Mayo Clinic Health System. In 2022, the organization announced it would be closing its hospital and emergency department in Arcadia and converting the facility into a clinic focused on outpatient services. With the elimination of emergency and inpatient hospital care, the fundamental need for an on-site medical heliport for patient transfers was removed.
The site is now the Mayo Clinic Health System - Arcadia Clinic. The facility no longer operates as a hospital and does not offer emergency services. While the physical concrete helipad structure may still exist on the property, it is officially decommissioned, inactive, and no longer used for aviation operations.
The Franciscan Skemp Mayo Health Systems Heliport was a private medical heliport that served as a critical piece of the emergency medical infrastructure for the rural community of Arcadia and surrounding Trempealeau County. Its primary function was to support the Mayo One air ambulance program, enabling the rapid transport of critically ill or injured patients. The heliport allowed for swift transfer to and from the Arcadia hospital to larger, more specialized trauma and cardiac centers, such as those in La Crosse, WI, or Rochester, MN, which was vital for time-sensitive medical cases.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Its existence was entirely dependent on the facility operating as a full-service hospital with an emergency department. Since these services have been permanently discontinued at the Arcadia location, there is no operational requirement for the heliport to be reactivated.
