Circa 1998-2003. The airport was still depicted on the 1998 Twin Cities aeronautical chart but was no longer shown on the 2003 chart. Aerial imagery from 1999 shows a clear runway, while photos from 2003 show it becoming overgrown, indicating closure within that timeframe.
Land redevelopment for residential use. Like many small, privately-owned airfields located near expanding urban centers, the land value for housing development surpassed its value as an airport. The pressure of suburban growth from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area led to the sale and redevelopment of the property.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. The coordinates point directly into this neighborhood. The land once occupied by the runway and associated facilities is now covered with single-family homes, lawns, and suburban streets. A subtle nod to the site's past may exist in local street names, a common practice in such redevelopments.
Sowieja Airport, also known as Sowieja Field, was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1965 and 1968 by its owner, John Sowieja. The airport primarily served local private pilots and their aircraft. It featured a single unpaved turf runway, designated 18/36, with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. For over 30 years, it was a feature of the local landscape and a part of the general aviation community south of the Twin Cities.
None. The prospect of reopening Sowieja Airport is zero. The land has been permanently and densely redeveloped for residential use, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
