Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 1965-1966. The airport was last depicted on the 1965 Sacramento Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1966 edition, indicating it closed within that one-year timeframe.

Reason for Closure

Urban encroachment and economic pressures. As the city of Sacramento expanded rapidly northward in the 1960s, the land occupied by the small airfield became far more valuable for residential and commercial development. The growth of the Natomas suburban area made the continued operation of a small general aviation airport unsustainable and impractical.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. It is now a dense residential neighborhood in South Natomas, Sacramento. The area where the runway and facilities once stood is now covered with single-family homes, streets (such as San Juan Road and Northview Drive), and parks. There are no visible traces or remnants of the original airport.

Historical Significance

Natomas Field (also known as Natomas Airport) was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield established in the post-World War II era, around 1946-1947. It served the local Sacramento aviation community, catering primarily to private pilots for recreational flying and flight training. When it first appeared on aeronautical charts in 1947, it was listed as having a 2,200-foot unpaved runway. It represented a typical post-war local airfield that supported the boom in private aviation before being consumed by suburban sprawl.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Natomas Field. The land is fully and densely developed, making any return to aviation use physically impossible without the large-scale demolition of an established community. The Sacramento area's aviation needs are comprehensively served by Sacramento International Airport (SMF), Sacramento Executive Airport (SAC), and Mather Airport (MHR).
