The heliport was permanently closed on or around September 25, 2008, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records.
The heliport was privately owned by Ferrellgas, a major US propane supplier. The closure was due to corporate reasons, not an accident or military conversion. It is likely the company either ceased operations at this specific Mason, Ohio facility, or eliminated the use of helicopter transport to this site as a cost-cutting measure. The 2008 timeframe coincides with the global financial crisis, during which many corporations scaled back on executive travel expenses.
The site is now a multi-tenant commercial office building and parking lot. The building formerly occupied by Ferrellgas now houses other businesses. The physical location of the helipad, in the southeast corner of the parking lot, is now used for standard vehicle parking. Faint markings of the painted 'H' and circle are still visible on the asphalt in satellite imagery, but it is no longer a functional or designated aviation facility.
Ferrell Flying Field Heliport was a private corporate heliport with no significant public or military history. Its sole purpose was to facilitate executive and personnel transport for Ferrellgas to its regional office located at 4670 Duke Drive. The facility consisted of a single, at-grade helipad painted on the surface of the company's parking lot. It handled only private, VFR (Visual Flight Rules) helicopter operations and was never open for public use.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The original owner and operator, Ferrellgas, no longer occupies the property. Given that the site has been fully repurposed for commercial office use and the former helipad area is now an integral part of the parking lot, reopening is considered highly improbable.
