The airport was closed between 1998 and 2004. The last known depiction on an aviation chart was in 1998. Aerial imagery from 2005 shows the initial stages of residential construction on the property, indicating it ceased operations in the years immediately prior, likely around 2004.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment and subsequent real estate development. The airport was situated in Prairieville, a rapidly growing suburb of Baton Rouge. The land became significantly more valuable for residential housing than for use as a private airfield, leading to its sale and redevelopment.
The site of the former Evan Airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential subdivision known as 'The Oaks at Evan Place'. The entire airfield, including the runway and any support structures, has been replaced by single-family homes, streets, and cul-de-sacs. The memory of the airport is preserved in some of the local street names, such as Eubanks Drive and Evan's Mill Drive, which are named after the former owner and the airport itself.
Evan Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was not depicted on charts in 1978 but appeared by 1985. The airport was owned by Evan E. Eubanks and featured a single unpaved turf runway, listed as 2,600 feet long. It served as a private base for local pilots in Ascension Parish, handling light single-engine aircraft. Its significance was primarily local, supporting the private aviation community before the area experienced major suburban expansion.
There are zero prospects for reopening Evan Airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to a high-density residential use. Homes and infrastructure have been built directly over the former runway and surrounding property, making any future aviation operations at this location physically impossible.
