Approximately between 2003 and 2006. The airport was listed as active in the 2002-2003 FAA Airport/Facility Directory but was noted as 'closed indefinitely' in aviation databases by 2006. The last known aeronautical chart to depict it as open was the 1998 Phoenix Sectional Chart.
The airport was a private-use airstrip owned by an individual, Forrest G. Jones. While the exact reason is not officially documented, closures of such private fields are typically due to the owner's personal circumstances, such as retirement, selling the property, passing away, or no longer having the financial means or desire to maintain the airstrip. There is no evidence of military conversion, significant accidents, or economic pressure from urban development, making a personal decision the most probable cause.
The site is now defunct as an airport. Current satellite imagery shows the faint but recognizable outline of the former north-south runway, which is now overgrown with desert scrub and vegetation. The land appears to be part of a private ranch or farm, with a residence and outbuildings located to the northeast of the former runway. The runway is completely unusable for aircraft operations.
Forrest Field was a private general aviation airport with limited historical significance beyond serving its owner and local community. It was not a public or commercial facility. When active, it featured a single 3,600-foot long by 50-foot wide dirt runway (18/36). Operations would have consisted of light, single-engine aircraft used for personal transportation, recreational flying, and potentially agricultural or ranching activities, which is common in rural Cochise County. Pilots required prior permission from the owner to land, as noted in official flight directories.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Forrest Field. As a privately owned strip on private land, any reopening would be solely at the discretion and expense of the current landowner. Given the availability of other public-use airports in the region, such as Bisbee Douglas International Airport (KDUG) located approximately 20 miles to the south, there is no public demand or commercial incentive for its reactivation. The prospects for reopening are considered non-existent.
