Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately mid-to-late 1980s. The airport was still depicted on a 1982 topographical map but had been completely redeveloped for industrial use by the time of a 1998 aerial photograph, indicating closure occurred within that period.

Reason for Closure

Economic and logistical redevelopment. The airport was a private field owned by Cummins Engine Company (now Cummins Inc.). The company chose to consolidate its corporate flight operations at the nearby, larger, and publicly-funded Columbus Municipal Airport (KBAK). This strategic move allowed Cummins to reclaim the valuable land for the significant expansion of its manufacturing and testing facilities.

Current Status

The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now the location of the Cummins Walesboro Component Plant (WCP), a major manufacturing facility for the company. The former runway's alignment is now occupied by large factory buildings, extensive parking lots, and a vehicle test track, with no visible remnants of the original airport.

Historical Significance

The airport, known locally as the Cummins Airport, served as the private corporate airfield for Cummins, a Fortune 500 company and the primary employer in the region. Established to support the company's growing national and international business, it was a vital logistical hub. The single-runway airport handled a variety of corporate aircraft, including turboprops and jets, used for transporting executives, engineers, clients, and high-priority parts. Its existence was a testament to the importance of corporate aviation for major industrial companies in the mid-20th century.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been fully repurposed for heavy industrial use by its owner, Cummins Inc. The aviation needs of the company and the surrounding community are comprehensively served by the nearby Columbus Municipal Airport (KBAK).
