Circa 1994. The airport was listed as active on 1993 aeronautical charts but was officially marked as closed on charts by 1998. Its closure directly coincided with the opening of its replacement facility.
The airport was decommissioned and closed due to its replacement by the new, larger, and more modern Aberdeen-Monroe County Airport (FAA: M40), which opened in 1994 about 4 miles to the northeast. The new airport offered a longer runway, updated navigation aids, and superior facilities, making the older Stinson Field obsolete. The closure was a planned municipal decision for infrastructure improvement and not the result of an accident, military conversion, or sudden economic failure.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped into an industrial park. Satellite imagery clearly shows the outline of the old north-south runway, which has been repurposed into an access road named 'Stinson Drive' in honor of the airport. Several large industrial buildings and commercial facilities have been constructed directly on the former airport grounds, including on old taxiways and apron areas. The land is now zoned for industrial and commercial use.
Established sometime before 1945, Stinson Field Municipal Airport served as the primary aviation gateway for the city of Aberdeen and Monroe County for approximately 50 years. It was a typical general aviation airport, supporting private pilots, business travel, agricultural aviation (crop dusting), and flight training. In its later years, it featured a single paved asphalt runway (18/36) that was approximately 3,200 feet long. It was a vital piece of local transportation infrastructure for half a century before being superseded.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Stinson Field. The site has been permanently and extensively redeveloped with industrial infrastructure, making a return to aviation use logistically and economically infeasible. The community's aviation needs are fully met by the active Aberdeen-Monroe County Airport (M40).
