The aerodrome was officially and permanently closed by Nassau County in March 2012.
The primary reason for closure was a land-use conflict and related safety concerns. Nassau County constructed a new go-kart track facility immediately adjacent to the flying field. The flight paths of the model aircraft would have crossed directly over the go-kart track, which was deemed an unacceptable safety risk by county officials, leading to the field's closure.
The site of the former aerodrome has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by the 'Cedar Creek Park Family Fun Center,' which features the large go-kart track that led to the field's closure, along with a mini-golf course and batting cages. All remnants of the original runways and flying circles have been removed.
This was not an airport for full-scale aircraft, but rather a world-renowned field for flying model airplanes (aeromodelling). Opened in the 1960s and named in honor of World War I flying ace Major Gervais Raoul Lufbery, it was widely considered one of the premier and best-equipped flying sites in the United States. The facility featured multiple paved runways for radio-controlled (RC) aircraft and dedicated, paved circles for control-line flying. The Lufbery Aerodrome was a major hub for the hobby, hosting numerous prestigious national and international competitions, including the 1972 FAI World Championships for Control Line Model Aircraft. Its closure was a significant loss to the aeromodelling community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. The land has been permanently repurposed for other recreational activities, and the significant investment in the go-kart track and associated facilities makes a return to its former use highly improbable.
