Approximately between 1995 and 2002. The airport was still visible in a 1995 aerial photograph, but by 2002, residential construction had begun on the site. The closure was gradual, with the land being sold for development in the late 1990s.
The primary reason for closure was economic, driven by rapid urban encroachment. The city of Katy, a suburb of Houston, experienced explosive population growth and suburban development during the 1980s and 1990s. The land value for residential real estate development became far greater than its value as a private airfield, making its sale to developers the most profitable option for the owners.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable. The land is occupied by the 'Pin Oak Village' residential subdivision. The former runway and airport facilities have been replaced by single-family homes, manicured streets (such as Pin Oak Village Drive and Village Park Drive), and community amenities. There are no remaining traces of the airport.
Cardiff Brothers Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1973 and 1978. It was owned by the Cardiff family and served the local private pilot community. According to the 1981 FAA Airport/Facility Directory, the airport featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway (17/35). It primarily handled light single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and personal transportation. While not of major national or military significance, it was a feature of the local aviation landscape when the area was still largely rural, before being overtaken by Houston's westward expansion.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and densely redeveloped for residential use. Reacquiring the land would require the purchase and demolition of hundreds of homes, making it logistically and financially impossible. The site will remain a residential neighborhood.
