The airport was closed sometime between 1998 and 2002. Aerial photography from 1998 shows the runway clearly marked and operational, while a 2002 aerial photo shows the runway area had been converted to agricultural use (hay farming), indicating aviation operations had ceased.
The airport was a private field, and its closure was not due to a single major event like an accident or military conversion. The most likely reason is a combination of factors common to the closure of private airfields: the owner's decision to cease flight operations and repurpose the land for more profitable use. The land was initially used for agriculture and was later sold for high-value residential development due to the suburban expansion of Whitehouse and nearby Tyler.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. The development is known as 'The Brooks at Whitehouse', with a section also referred to as the 'Nuttall Addition'. The former runway, taxiways, and hangar area are now covered with single-family homes, paved streets, and retention ponds. As a tribute to its aviation past, some of the streets in the subdivision have aviation-themed names, such as 'Nuttall Drive' and 'Propeller Court'.
Nuttall Airport was a private general aviation airfield owned and operated by Dr. Pat Nuttall, a local physician and pilot. It first appeared on aeronautical charts around 1983. The facility consisted of a single 3,000-foot unpaved turf runway (Runway 17/35) and at least one hangar. Its significance was primarily local, serving as a convenient base for the owner's personal aircraft and likely for other pilots in the community. It represented the vibrant private aviation culture in East Texas during its operational years but had no commercial or military role.
There are zero prospects for reopening Nuttall Airport. The land has been permanently and completely converted to a dense residential use, making any future aviation operations at this location impossible.
