The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the heliport was decommissioned sometime between 2015 and 2017. Imagery from 2012-2015 shows clear helipad markings, while images from 2017 onwards show the markings have faded completely and the area is being used for vehicle and equipment storage.
While no official reason has been published, the closure was almost certainly due to economic and logistical reasons. Maintaining a dedicated helicopter program and a certified heliport is extremely expensive for a small municipal police department like Colts Neck's. It is a common practice for smaller townships to dissolve their aviation units and instead rely on shared, regional assets provided by larger entities like the county (Monmouth County Sheriff's Office) or state (New Jersey State Police), which is far more cost-effective.
The site is no longer an active heliport. The paved landing area behind the police station still exists, but the circular helipad markings (including the 'H') have been removed or have completely faded. The area is now used as a parking lot and storage area for police cruisers, trailers, and other departmental equipment.
The Colts Neck Police Heliport (US-0202) was a private heliport located directly on the grounds of the Colts Neck Police Department headquarters at 124 Cedar Drive. Its purpose was to support law enforcement operations. When active, it would have been used as a base or designated landing zone for helicopters involved in aerial surveillance, search and rescue, traffic monitoring, and providing air support for officers on the ground. It facilitated a rapid aerial response capability specifically for the township, though it may have also served helicopters from neighboring or regional agencies.
There are no known plans or public discussions about reopening the heliport. Given the significant costs associated with operating an aviation facility and the availability of robust state and county aerial support, the prospect of it being reopened is considered extremely low to non-existent.
