Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was officially closed and removed from the FAA's Airport/Facility Directory (A/FD) around 2008. The exact date of the last flight is unknown, but its operational status ceased in the late 2000s.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the closure was its proximity to the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground (YPG). The airstrip was located directly adjacent to and underneath the YPG's restricted airspace (R-2312). Following the events of 9/11, security and operational control over airspace near sensitive military installations were significantly tightened. The continued operation of a private, civilian airstrip in such a location became untenable due to security concerns and potential conflicts with military testing activities. While economic factors like insurance liability and maintenance costs for the resort may have contributed, the overriding factor was military airspace encroachment.

Current Status

The site of the former airstrip is no longer used for aviation. The land has been repurposed by the Fisher's Landing Resort. Current satellite imagery shows that the area of the former runway is now primarily used for long-term storage of recreational vehicles (RVs) and boats. The faint outline of the runway is still visible from the air, but it is obstructed and clearly not maintained for aircraft operations. The site is now fully integrated into the ground-based operations of the resort.

Historical Significance

Fisher's Landing Resort Airstrip was a private-use airfield that served a specific, recreational purpose. Its significance was tied directly to the Fisher's Landing Resort, a popular destination for boaters, fishermen, and vacationers on the Colorado River. The airstrip, which featured a single unpaved 2,600-foot dirt/gravel runway (16/34), provided a convenient 'fly-in' option for general aviation pilots. Pilots could land their personal aircraft, often single-engine planes like Cessnas and Pipers, and walk directly to the resort's amenities, marina, and lodging. It represented a classic mid-to-late 20th-century recreational airstrip, enhancing the accessibility of a remote leisure destination before its location became a security concern.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Fisher's Landing Resort Airstrip. The fundamental reason for its closure—the proximity to the active and sensitive Yuma Proving Ground—remains. The military's need for secure, restricted airspace has not diminished. Furthermore, the resort has repurposed the valuable land for other revenue-generating purposes (RV/boat storage). The combination of prohibitive security/airspace issues and the successful alternative use of the land makes the prospect of reopening the airstrip virtually zero.
