Circa 2003-2004. The airport was last depicted on the 2003 Del Rio Sectional Chart. Aerial imagery from 2004 clearly shows large, white closed-runway 'X' symbols painted on both ends of the runway, confirming its closure by that year.
The specific reason for closure is not publicly documented. As a private airfield owned by 'Rancho Grande Inc.', the closure was almost certainly due to private economic or operational decisions. Common reasons for such closures include a change in ranch ownership, the owner ceasing to be an active pilot, or the prohibitive costs of runway maintenance, liability, and insurance.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. Current satellite imagery shows the asphalt runway is still clearly visible but is unmaintained and deteriorating. The closed-runway 'X' markings, though faded, can still be seen at the thresholds. The land remains part of the private Rancho Grande ranch, and the former airstrip is not used for any aviation purposes. The associated ranch buildings are located to the southeast of the old runway.
Rancho Grande Airport was a significant private airstrip that provided direct air access to a large, remote ranch in Crockett County, Texas. Established sometime between 1965 and 1970, it featured a single, well-maintained 4,000-foot by 50-foot paved runway. Its primary function was to support the operations of the ranch, allowing the owners, guests, and business associates to bypass long drives from the nearest public airports. It handled private general aviation traffic, likely consisting of single and twin-engine propeller aircraft, which were essential for transportation and property management in the vast, sparsely populated region of West Texas.
There are no known plans or public prospects for reopening Rancho Grande Airport. As it is located on private property and has been defunct for approximately two decades, any potential for reopening would be entirely dependent on a future decision by the landowner to invest in restoring the facility for their own private use. It is not included in any FAA or state aviation plans.
