The airport closed sometime between 1982 and 1993. It was listed as active in the 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory but was no longer depicted on the 1993 San Antonio Sectional Chart. A 1995 aerial photograph confirms its closure, showing large closed-runway 'X' symbols on the airfield.
The closure was a direct result of urban encroachment and subsequent industrial redevelopment. The land in the rapidly growing area south of San Antonio became significantly more valuable for industrial purposes. The construction of the massive Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (TMMTX) plant, which began in 2003 on the land that included the former airport, sealed its fate. There is no evidence of closure due to a specific accident or military conversion.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the vehicle storage and logistics hub for the adjacent Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (TMMTX) plant. The faint outline of the former runway is still visible from satellite imagery, but it has been paved over and is now used as a massive parking and staging lot for thousands of newly manufactured Toyota Tundra and Sequoia vehicles.
Also known as Watson Airport, Rio Medina Airport was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. It featured a single unpaved turf runway (17/35) with a length of approximately 3,000 feet. Its operations were typical for a small local airfield, handling private recreational flying, and possibly some flight training or agricultural aviation. It served the local general aviation community but was not a major commercial or military facility.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for critical industrial operations by the Toyota automotive plant, and all original aviation infrastructure has been removed and built over.
