Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2005-2006. The airport was still listed in the 2005 FAA Airport/Facility Directory but was noted as 'Airport closed indefinitely' in the 2006 edition. Aerial imagery shows a house being constructed on the northern end of the runway as early as 2002, indicating the conversion process had already begun.

Reason for Closure

The closure was due to the private owner's decision to redevelop the land for residential use. As the San Antonio metropolitan area expanded, the land became more valuable for housing than for private aviation. This is a common reason for the closure of small, privately-owned airfields located near growing urban centers.

Current Status

The site of the former Idle Airpark has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. The faint outline of the former north-south runway is still visible in the alignment of property lines and backyards. A street within the development, 'Idlewood Dr', runs parallel to the path of the old runway, serving as a subtle nod to the site's aviation history. No hangars, runway surfaces, or other aviation infrastructure remain.

Historical Significance

Idle Airpark was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield that served local pilots. It first appeared on aeronautical charts in 1973. The airpark was owned by W.G. Idle and featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway (Runway 17/35). It primarily handled light single-engine aircraft for recreational and personal flying. It represented a typical mid-to-late 20th-century private airstrip, supporting a local aviation community before succumbing to urban development.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Idle Airpark. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted for residential use, with numerous homes and associated infrastructure built directly on the former airfield grounds.
