Circa late 1990s to early 2000s. The airfield was last depicted on the 1987-88 Texas Aeronautical Chart. By 2004, aerial imagery shows that Midway Drive had been constructed directly across the former runway, marking the definitive end of the airfield.
Urban expansion and commercial development. The airfield was situated on prime real estate adjacent to Interstate 35. The land was sold and redeveloped to support the city's growth, leading to the construction of industrial facilities and new roads directly on the former airport grounds.
The site is now completely unrecognizable as an airfield. It has been fully absorbed into a commercial and industrial park. The path of the former runway is now occupied by Midway Drive and large distribution centers, including a Walmart Distribution Center and a Performance Food Group (PFG) facility. There are no remaining traces of the runway, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure.
Little Elm Field was a private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1965 and 1970. It featured a single unpaved turf runway, listed in 1982 as being 2,600 feet long and designated Runway 13/31. The field's most prominent owner was Frank W. Mayborn, the influential publisher of the Temple Daily Telegram and a major local figure. The airport primarily served as a private landing strip for its owner and associates and did not handle scheduled commercial or military traffic. Its significance was local, serving the private aviation interests of a key community leader.
None. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed with extensive infrastructure and large-scale buildings, making any prospect of reopening as an airport impossible.
