Approximately 2015-2016. Satellite imagery shows the facility was intact in early 2015, but by 2017, the site had been cleared and construction was underway for the current retail development. The closure coincided with the operator relocating to a new, larger facility.
Economic and operational relocation. The operator, Falck Safety Services (which had acquired the original 'Operators Inc.'), constructed a new, state-of-the-art safety and survival training center in the nearby town of Scott, Louisiana. This new facility offered expanded capabilities, rendering the older Lafayette site redundant. The prime real estate of the former heliport and training ground was subsequently sold for high-value commercial redevelopment.
The site has been completely demolished and redeveloped. It is now a major retail shopping center. The exact coordinates of the former heliport and training facility are now occupied by a Costco Wholesale store, a Dave & Buster's, and their associated parking lots and infrastructure. All traces of the former aviation and training facility have been removed.
The heliport was not a public transport hub but an integral part of a specialized training facility crucial to the Gulf of Mexico's offshore oil and gas industry. Originally owned by Operators & Consulting Services, Inc. (OCS) and later by Falck Safety Services (now known as RelyOn Nutec), the facility provided essential safety and survival training. The heliport's primary function was to support Helicopter Underwater Egress Training (HUET), where a helicopter fuselage mockup (a 'dunker') is submerged in a large pool to teach personnel how to escape a crashed helicopter. The heliport was used to simulate realistic scenarios and handle the logistics of this training. It served thousands of offshore workers, significantly contributing to the safety standards of the regional energy sector.
There are zero prospects for reopening the heliport. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for a high-traffic commercial use, and the original operator has successfully established its new, superior facility elsewhere. The land's current value as a retail hub precludes any possibility of reverting to its former use as a private heliport.
