Circa 1998-2000. The airport was last depicted on a 1998 aeronautical chart and was listed in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport/Facility Directory as 'closed indefinitely' by 2000. It was no longer shown on the 2004 Atlanta Sectional Chart.
The specific reason is not publicly documented. As a privately owned airfield, the closure was most likely a personal decision by the owner. Common reasons for such closures include the owner's retirement or death, the sale of the property, prohibitive liability insurance costs, or the high expense of maintenance. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident, urban encroachment, or military conversion.
The airport is permanently closed. Current satellite imagery of the location shows the faint but clear outline of the former north-south runway. The land is now an overgrown field, appearing to be used as pasture or part of a larger private, rural property. A building that was likely the original hangar or an associated structure is still visible at the north end of the former runway.
Treadwell Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield primarily serving its owner and local pilots who had permission to use it. It was not a public-use airport and had no commercial or significant military operations. According to a 1982 directory, it was owned by H. Treadwell and featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway (designated 18/36). Its operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft for personal and recreational flying.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Treadwell Airport. Given that it has been closed for over two decades and the land remains privately owned, its reactivation as an airfield is highly unlikely.
