Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 2003 and 2005. The airport was still depicted on the 2003 Phoenix Sectional Chart, but aerial imagery from 2005 shows the runway being actively obliterated by the construction of new residential streets.

Reason for Closure

Urban encroachment and real estate development. The rapid expansion of the Phoenix metropolitan area, specifically the large-scale Sun City Grand retirement community, led to the land being sold for lucrative residential development. The housing development was built directly over the airport's location.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now a dense residential neighborhood within the Sun City Grand community of Surprise, Arizona. The exact location of the former runway and hangar is now covered by homes, yards, and streets, including West Desert Vista Boulevard and North 175th Avenue. There are no remaining physical traces of the airport.

Historical Significance

Harts Field was a private-use general aviation airfield owned by John Hart. It was not depicted on charts in the mid-20th century but appeared on the Phoenix Sectional Chart by 1980. It featured a single unpaved runway, initially 2,600 feet long and later extended to 3,400 feet, oriented NE/SW (approximately Runway 4/22). Operations were limited to private, light single-engine aircraft for personal and recreational flying. The airfield had a small hangar and a few tiedown spots. Its significance lies in being a typical example of the numerous small, private airfields that once dotted the desert landscape around Phoenix before being consumed by suburban sprawl.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been permanently and fully converted to high-density residential use. It is physically, legally, and economically impossible for the airport to be re-established at this location.
