Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 2003 to early 2004. The FAA officially cancelled the airport identifier on January 15, 2004.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and urban development. The airport's owner, Gale Williams, decided to sell the property. The land had become highly valuable for residential real estate due to the suburban expansion of the Cincinnati-Dayton metro area. The property was sold to a developer to be converted into a housing subdivision.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and no longer exists as an airport. The land is now a large, upscale residential housing development named 'The Estates of San Mar Gale,' which pays homage to the former airport. All airport infrastructure, including the runway, taxiways, and hangars, has been demolished and replaced with single-family homes, streets, and cul-de-sacs. Some of the street names within the development have aviation themes, such as Propeller Lane and Tailwind Court, further acknowledging the site's history.

Historical Significance

San Mar Gale was a privately-owned, public-use general aviation airport that served the Lebanon and Warren County, Ohio community for several decades, likely established in the early 1960s. Its unique name was a portmanteau of the founding family's names: daughter Sandy, wife Mary, and owner Gale Williams. The airport featured a single paved 3,100-foot runway (9/27) and provided essential services for local pilots, including fuel, hangars, maintenance, and flight instruction. It was known for its friendly, grassroots aviation atmosphere and was a beloved hub for the local general aviation community.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to a high-density residential area. The complete redevelopment of the site for housing makes the return of aviation activities impossible.
