The airport was closed sometime between 1998 and 2004. It was last depicted as an active private airfield on the 1998 World Aeronautical Chart and was subsequently marked as an abandoned airfield on the 2004 Denver Sectional Chart.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a private airstrip exclusively serving a ranch, the most probable reason is the cessation of aviation activities by the owner. This could have been due to the sale of the property, the owner no longer flying, or the high cost and liability associated with maintaining a private, high-altitude airfield. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a specific accident, military conversion, or broader economic factors.
The site is currently private ranch land. Satellite imagery of the coordinates clearly shows the faint outline of the former unpaved runway located in a large meadow. The runway is unmaintained, overgrown with grass and other vegetation, and is no longer suitable for any aviation use. The land has reverted to its agricultural purpose as a field or pasture within the larger ranch property.
The airport's primary significance was as a private, high-altitude general aviation airstrip. Located at a challenging elevation of approximately 9,500 feet, it served the Heckendorf Ranches. Operations, which began sometime before its first charting in 1968, consisted of light, single-engine aircraft used for personal transportation and ranch business. The airfield was a notable example of private aviation in Colorado's demanding mountain environment, requiring skilled pilots to manage the high-density altitude conditions for takeoff and landing. It featured a single, unpaved 4,000-foot runway aligned roughly east-west.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Since the land is privately owned and the airfield has been defunct for approximately two decades, any reopening would be solely at the discretion and expense of the current landowner. Given the remote location, the private nature of its original use, and the lack of any public or commercial demand, the prospect of it being reactivated as an airfield is considered extremely unlikely.
