Approximately February 2018
The heliport's closure was a direct result of the permanent closure of the hospital it served. The facility, originally Moosa Memorial Hospital, had been renamed Acadian Medical Center. In late 2017, its parent company announced the hospital would be closing due to financial and operational challenges, with the final shutdown occurring in February 2018. Without an active hospital to support, the heliport had no operational purpose and was permanently decommissioned.
The site of the former Moosa Memorial Hospital / Acadian Medical Center did not remain vacant. In 2020, the facility was acquired by Ochsner Lafayette General and, after significant investment and redevelopment, reopened as Ochsner Acadia Medical Center. The original heliport, US-0040, is defunct. The redeveloped hospital campus now includes a new, modern heliport with the FAA identifier 3LA3, located at approximately the same site to serve the new medical center's emergency and transport needs.
Moosa Memorial Hospital Heliport (US-0040) was a private-use facility integral to the emergency medical infrastructure of Eunice and the surrounding Acadia Parish. Its sole purpose was to support air ambulance and medical evacuation (medevac) operations for Moosa Memorial Hospital. The heliport enabled the rapid transfer of critically injured or ill patients from accident scenes or smaller rural clinics to the hospital's emergency department. It also facilitated the swift transport of patients requiring specialized care from Moosa Memorial to larger, tertiary care centers in cities like Lafayette or New Orleans. It was a critical link in the regional chain of survival for trauma and critical care patients.
There are no prospects for reopening the heliport under the identifier US-0040. It has been officially and permanently closed. The function it once served has been assumed by a new, modern heliport (3LA3) constructed for the Ochsner Acadia Medical Center, which now operates on the site.
