Approximately between 1987 and 1992. The airport was still depicted on a 1987 aerial photograph but appears to have been closed by the early 1990s when major redevelopment of the area began.
Economic reasons driven by urban encroachment. The airport was situated in the Natomas area of Sacramento, which was primarily agricultural land. Starting in the 1980s, this area was rezoned and became the target of massive commercial and residential development. The value of the land for real estate development far exceeded its value as a private airfield, leading to its sale and subsequent redevelopment.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable as an airport. The land is part of a large commercial and light industrial business park known as Sacramento Gateway. The former runway and airport grounds are now occupied by office buildings, warehouses, distribution centers, and parking lots. Notable landmarks on or immediately adjacent to the former airport property include the Raley's corporate headquarters and various other commercial enterprises. The road 'Gateway Park Boulevard' runs directly through the former airport site.
Tenco Tractor Airport was a private-use airfield owned and operated by Tenco Tractor Inc., the regional dealer for Caterpillar heavy equipment. Its primary function was to support the company's business operations. It served as a corporate airport, allowing executives, key personnel, and clients to travel efficiently throughout the company's large service area in Northern California. The 1982 AOPA Airport Directory listed the facility as having a single 3,500-foot paved runway (16/34) and noted it was a private field. The airport is a classic example of a mid-century corporate airstrip that was eventually consumed by the city's expansion.
None. The land has been fully and densely developed with high-value commercial real estate. There is no physical space remaining for an airport, and the land use is incompatible with aviation operations. Re-establishing an airport at this location is not feasible.
