Between 1991 and 1993. The airfield was last depicted as active on the 1991 Washington Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1993 edition.
Urban encroachment and residential redevelopment. The land occupied by the airfield was sold and developed into a housing subdivision, a common fate for small, privately-owned airports located in growing suburban areas where land values for real estate exceed their value for aviation.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now a residential housing subdivision. The coordinates point directly into this neighborhood. The memory of the airfield is preserved in local street names; the road that runs along the path of the former runway is named 'Wharton's Way'. Other nearby streets, such as 'Airmont Drive' and 'Propeller Lane', also pay homage to the site's aviation history.
Wharton Field was a small, private general aviation airport. It became operational sometime before 1973, as it first appeared on the Washington Sectional Chart that year. It featured a single, unpaved north/south turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. The airfield served the local private pilot community in Mechanicsville and Hanover County, catering to light single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and personal transport. It was not a commercial or military facility but represented a typical grassroots aviation airstrip of its era.
Non-existent. The land is fully occupied by single-family homes, streets, and associated infrastructure. There are no plans or possibilities for the site to ever be reverted to use as an airport.
