Approximately late 1993 to early 1994. The airport was last depicted on the March 1993 Kansas City Sectional Chart but was removed by the October 1994 edition, pinpointing its closure to the period immediately following the Great Flood of 1993.
The airport was destroyed by the Great Flood of 1993. Located in the flood plain of the Grand River, the airfield was inundated and rendered unusable by the catastrophic flooding. This same event destroyed the original town of Pattonsburg, which was subsequently relocated to higher ground, making the airport's location both physically damaged and geographically obsolete.
The site of the former airport has been completely reclaimed for agricultural purposes. Modern satellite imagery shows the land is now actively cultivated farmland. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation-related infrastructure.
Watson Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was owned and operated by a local resident, William Watson. The facility consisted of a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long. Its operations were primarily for personal and recreational flying, serving its owner and potentially the local community. It was not a commercial airport and held local, rather than national, significance before its destruction.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Watson Airport. The land is now privately owned and used for farming. Furthermore, its location within a known, severe flood plain makes it an unsuitable and unsafe location for any future airport development. The relocation of the town of Pattonsburg also removes the original community it was intended to serve.
