Circa July 2012. The heliport's primary user, the Virginia Beach Police Department's aviation unit, was officially grounded on July 1, 2012. The heliport was subsequently decommissioned and formally listed as 'permanently closed' in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) databases.
Economic and operational reasons. The City of Virginia Beach disbanded its police helicopter unit in 2012 as a cost-saving measure, which was projected to save the city over $1 million annually. This decision eliminated the primary user and the main justification for the heliport's operation, leading to its closure.
The physical helipad structure still exists. Satellite imagery confirms a circular, paved landing pad marked with a white 'H' is still visible on the grounds of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center, situated in a grassy area near City Hall. However, it is no longer an active or officially recognized aviation facility. It is not maintained for flight operations and is effectively just a remnant piece of pavement.
City Heliport (US-0013) was a private-use facility owned and operated by the City of Virginia Beach, strategically located at its Municipal Center. Its principal function was to serve as the base for the Virginia Beach Police Department's (VBPD) Aviation Unit. The police helicopters operating from this site were used for a variety of public safety missions, including aerial patrol, suspect pursuit, search and rescue operations, and aerial support for ground units. The heliport was an integral part of the city's public safety infrastructure during the time the aviation unit was active.
There are no known public plans or prospects to reopen the heliport. The closure was a direct result of a strategic and financial decision by the city to eliminate its police air wing. Reopening the facility would likely require the City of Virginia Beach to re-establish a helicopter unit or identify a new, compelling operational need for a heliport at the Municipal Center, neither of which has been proposed.
