Approximately between 1998 and 2002. The airfield was still listed in the FAA Airport/Facility Directory in 1998, but aerial imagery from 2002 shows the initial stages of residential construction on the property.
Economic reasons, specifically the sale and redevelopment of the land for residential use. The location, north of Austin in a growing suburban corridor, made the land significantly more valuable for housing than for a private airfield. This is a common fate for small, privately-owned airports near expanding urban areas.
The site has been completely redeveloped into a high-end residential neighborhood called 'Keno Ranch'. The main road through the development, Keno Ranch Road, follows the approximate centerline of the former runway. There are no remaining traces of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure. The land is now occupied by numerous single-family homes on large lots.
Keno Field was a private general aviation airfield owned by Kenneth P. Brown, from whom the name 'Keno' was likely derived. It featured a single 3,000-foot turf runway designated 16/34. The airport was active from at least the mid-1980s, appearing on the 1986 San Antonio Sectional Chart. Its operations were limited to private recreational flying for the owner and possibly invited guests. It held no major commercial or military significance, serving as a personal-use airstrip typical of many found in rural Texas.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The airport has been permanently and irrevocably replaced by a residential housing development. The land is subdivided and owned by multiple private homeowners, making any attempt to reassemble the property for aviation use logistically and financially impossible.
