Taxis are readily available across the street from the baggage claim areas, with a dispatcher on-site to assist passengers. Ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft also operate from designated pickup zones at the airport.
Major car rental companies (including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National) are located in a consolidated facility across the street from the terminal. Free, dedicated shuttles run continuously between the baggage claim areas and the rental car center. Booking in advance is highly recommended.
The Hele-On Bus, the county's public transit system, offers limited service to and from the airport. While it is an affordable option, routes and schedules are infrequent and may not be convenient for travelers with significant luggage. It is best to check the official Hele-On Bus website for current timetables.
Saw whales breaching during my descent into Kona! The ocean was sparkling and it was a clear day!
Recommend Tropicbird Flight School if you are wanting to rent an aircraft while on the Big Island. They have great aircraft including a 182; a G1000 172 and Diamond 120. Call Mike or Ashley to reserve an aircraft. Spectacular island flying!
The approach into this airport is amazing with blackened earth surrounding pristine tarmac. It was quite the shock to see this place in the middle of paradise. The airport itself is made up of a series of interconnected huts. Half the time you are outdoors even on the airside.
