The airport was officially deactivated on November 18, 2010. FAA records indicate this as the formal date its status changed to permanently closed.
The primary reason for the closure was economic, specifically the sale of the privately-owned land for real estate development. Like many small, private airfields located near growing communities, the value of the land for residential housing surpassed its value as an airfield, leading the owner to sell the property.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows no trace of the former runway or any aviation facilities. The land is now occupied by single-family homes, streets, and lawns. In a tribute to the site's history, the main road in the subdivision is named 'Wenning Street', and the development itself is reportedly called 'The Landings'.
Wenning Landing Area was a small, privately owned, private-use general aviation airport. It was not a major commercial or military facility and its significance was primarily local. Established sometime between 1965 and 1970, it was owned and operated by Edward J. Wenning. The airport featured a single turf runway (designated 9/27) measuring approximately 2,225 by 100 feet. It served as a base for a small number of single-engine aircraft, catering to the owner and potentially other local aviation enthusiasts. It appeared on Detroit Sectional Aeronautical Charts for several decades, serving as a landmark for pilots in the area.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to a high-density residential area, making any future aviation use impossible.
