The heliport was officially deactivated by the FAA on November 12, 2020. This coincided with the phased closure of the Hackley Hospital campus, which was fully vacated by the end of 2020.
The closure was a direct result of a strategic hospital consolidation. The heliport's parent institution, Hackley Hospital, was part of Mercy Health, which consolidated its two legacy Muskegon campuses (Hackley and Mercy) into a single, new, state-of-the-art facility, the Mercy Health Muskegon Medical Center, at a different location. With the closure and subsequent demolition of the Hackley Hospital campus, the associated heliport was no longer required.
The heliport and the entire Hackley Hospital complex no longer exist. Demolition of the hospital towers and surrounding buildings began in 2021. The site at 1700 Clinton Street is currently undergoing a major redevelopment project to transform the former hospital grounds into a new mixed-use neighborhood featuring housing, green spaces, and commercial facilities.
As the Hackley Hospital Emergency Heliport, MI17 played a crucial role in the regional emergency medical system for many years. Its primary function was to serve as a landing zone for medical evacuation (medevac) helicopters. It facilitated the rapid transport of critically ill or injured patients from accident scenes and smaller, rural hospitals to Hackley Hospital's Level II Trauma Center and emergency department. This capability was vital for time-sensitive cases such as major trauma, strokes, and heart attacks, significantly improving the chances of survival and recovery for patients in West Michigan.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The land has been completely repurposed, and the hospital it served has been permanently closed. All aeromedical services for the area are now handled by the new, modern heliport (ICAO: 0MI1) located at the consolidated Mercy Health Muskegon Medical Center.
