The heliport was officially and permanently closed on April 22, 2004, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records.
While no single official reason was publicly announced, the closure is consistent with a nationwide trend following the September 11, 2001 attacks. Many private, urban heliports were closed due to a combination of factors including: significantly heightened security regulations for airspace over downtown areas, increased operational complexity, and prohibitively high insurance and liability costs. It is also likely that the primary corporate user's need for the facility had diminished, making it no longer economically viable to maintain and certify.
The site is the rooftop of the U.S. Bank Plaza, a major commercial office tower located at 101 S Capitol Blvd in downtown Boise. Although the facility is permanently closed and non-operational, faint markings of the helipad (a circle with an 'H') are still visible on the roof via satellite imagery. The area is simply part of the building's roof structure and is not maintained or certified for any aviation activity.
Boise Plaza Heliport (ID89) was a private-use heliport situated atop the U.S. Bank Plaza building, which was the tallest building in Idaho for a significant period. Owned by U.S. Bank of Idaho, its primary operation was providing corporate and executive transport. It allowed high-level executives and clients to travel quickly between the downtown office and the main Boise Airport (KBOI) or other regional locations, bypassing ground traffic. The heliport was a symbol of corporate prestige and logistical efficiency for the building's primary tenants.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Boise Plaza Heliport. The significant regulatory, security, and financial hurdles associated with recertifying and operating a rooftop heliport in a modern downtown environment make its reactivation extremely unlikely.
