Approximately late 1970s to early 1980s. The airstrip was abandoned gradually rather than officially closed on a specific date.
Economic reasons. The airstrip was built exclusively to support mineral exploration at the nearby 'Yukonia' lead-zinc-silver prospect. When exploration activities ceased after failing to identify a commercially viable ore body, the associated camp and airstrip were abandoned due to a lack of purpose and funding for maintenance.
The site is abandoned and unmaintained. Satellite imagery shows a clear outline of a single gravel/dirt runway, approximately 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) in length, located on the west bank of the Coal River. The surface is significantly deteriorated and is being reclaimed by vegetation, making it unusable for aircraft. There are no remaining buildings, hangars, or any other infrastructure at the site.
The Yukonia Airstrip was a private, utilitarian bush strip with no scheduled passenger or public service. Its sole historical significance was as a critical logistical hub for the Yukonia mineral exploration project, which was active primarily from the 1950s through the 1970s. Located in a remote wilderness, the airstrip enabled the transport of personnel, geological equipment, fuel, and supplies to the exploration camp. It is representative of the many temporary airstrips built across Northern Canada to support the mid-20th century mining and resource exploration boom.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Yukonia Airstrip. Any future reopening would be entirely contingent on a renewed and significant economic interest in the mineral resources in the immediate area, which would require a major investment to re-establish the airstrip and other necessary infrastructure. This is considered highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.
